Motorhead discussion in a cubicle--it really happened!

Posted at 9:50 AM on January 12, 2007 by Christina Schmitt (40 Comments)

The best thing about working at MPR, hands down, are my colleagues. They're smart, they're dedicated, and some of them are waaaay into Motorhead.

I don't know how Lemmy would feel about having three office drones discussing Motorhead in a cubicle. I'd like to think he would give us a big, crusty hug. (I've never met Lemmy in person, but I'm almost positive he would smell of cigarettes and body odor, and that I still would appreciate the hug.)

Here's how the conversation started: David Safar, The Current's assistant music director, recently tacked up a 2007 punk rock calendar in his cubicle. I noticed it and said, "Cool!" That made Barb Abney, The Current's weekday host, 9 a.m.-noon, stop by and say her son has the same calendar. And then I did my imitation of Lemmy performing at First Ave, where he boosts his mic stand about a foot over his head, tilts the mic down to his face and then spends the entire set screaming up to the mic.

Then somehow this devolved into a conversation about neon-lettered, metalhead t-shirts that wouldn't be appropriate to wear to work--Barb's was an old Ozzy t-shirt, and mine was from L7. It wouldn't be appropriate to discuss here why they were inappropriate.

What do you think about Motorhead? What's the band you would be most surprised to discuss in the workplace? What's the best cubicle discussion about music you've had at work? And no, I don't want to hear about anything inappropriate.

Motorhead are indeed the best of the best and there couldn't be a better cubicle discussion subject!
Have a good weekend

I feel like such a dweeb! I was a mod kid, and missed punk rock and metal entirely. Save for the Exploited/7 Seconds show I got dragged to in 7th grade (that would be 1987), I was too busy spraying my hair and buffing my creepers to listen to Motorhead. I am a lesser person for it, clearly. Maybe if I'd had a little Lemmy in my life, and a little less Sisters of Mercy, I could have saved a lot of money on antidepressants down the line.

I thought for a second that this conversation stemmed from Rock the Cradle when Danny Sigelman spotted a two-yr-old in a Motorhead tee shirt. True story.

You guys rock! Our Office Assistant plays drums in a band so we talk about music all the time, but I certainly could not wear my Motorhead t-shirt to work, or any punk rock shirt for that matter. Unfortunately, punk rock tees do not fall under what is considered "business casual."

Remember the Brendan Fraser movie Airheads? "Who would win in a fight Lemmy or God?"

Lemmy: "When there are two or more of you gathered in my name, there is rock."

On Keith Olbermann last night (or was it the night before?), he showed a Congressman talking to Congress about how bad the President's strategy is for Iraq. Funny thing is that he used Star Trek as the metaphor, speaking of Spock and Klingons. Frankly, if this is happening in Congress, it won't be long until you can wear whatever T-shirt you want to work. :)

Working in offices is for squares, so I work at weddings. Unfortunately, the discussion isn't much better, and I actually have to dress like more of a square than most office schlubs. So I guess the coolest wedding music happening was one where the couple did their first dance to "Haunted" by Shane MacGowan and Sinead O'Connor, then played the Moldy Peaches (someone's favorite!) and a bunch of Tom Waits during the reception. But really, weddings are certainly not the place for cool rock music.

We were discussing The Dropkick Murphys in my cubicle the other day. Usually, though, the cube chats center around football and Ultimate Fighting. There are only three guys in our entire department, so we have to get together in my cube--the conversations in the break room are usually centered around sales at Target, hair products and kid-related events.

Gee whiz. Motorhead. In an office.

And not even a link to the Wikipedia entry for the heavy metal umlaut.

Gee.

Whiz.
