Blissed out on Badfinger

I said a silent "yes!" when The Current added The Very Best of Badfinger to its back catalog last week.

Badfinger songs make me feel "blissed out" - a dangerously happy emotion. It's like driving to the West Coast with your dream boyfriend, and the Wyoming dead zone starts to look beautiful. Badfinger’s "Baby Blue" can make you admire Boyfriend – who is a bit of a self-righteous vegan – as he resorts to eating things with eggs and milk in them because the vegetables at the roadside diners look sickly.

By the way, dreamy boyfriend would be really irritated at being identified with Badfinger. He would rather be camped with Fugazi, even though he’s an emo-musician with a touch of AC/DC inside. Note: dreamy boyfriend would really, really hate to be considered an emo-musician. Also note dreamy boyfriend is now an ex (which has more to do with the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun" than Badfinger or AC/DC).

What music makes you feel blissed out? Does that music clash with reality and is that causing problems for you?

That is a great - and tough - question. My most recent bliss out was thanks to an unknown-to-me classical music piece I heard just over a week ago. I don't know the name, the artist, nothing. Does that clash with reality? Nah, in the scheme of things those details don't really matter. I'll probably stumble upon it at some point on the dial and when I recognize the sweetness, the loneliness, and the vitality of it I'll just know.

In other news you've inspired me to fire up some Badfinger, right after my girl-group happiness [oooh Heatwave!] finishes spinning here. Its going to be an interesting musical day, no?

Ah, the road trip / music / ex-boyfriend dilemna. First you fall in love with someone to a particular set of songs. Then you share a remarkable moment with them and said songs - usually involving a long drive for no real reason - and then you break up and have to retire those songs, even though they are the PERFECT songs for long drives.

Goodbye Jayhawks' "Hollywood Town Hall" (burned that out on TWO boyfriends and TWO roadtrips...),
Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea", Elliot Smith's "Either / Or", and about a dozen mix CDs and tapes. It's great to hear a song off of those on the air every now and then, invoking whistful memories of days gone by. But in general, never to be listened to in long form again.

I always get blissed out on Badfinger. There's something so rich about those melodies and harmonies. Whether playing them on your car stereo or blasting them in your backyard, there's just something so right and natural about the whole thing. Pete Ham was such a deep, gentle soul and it shines through in his wonderful songs. Almost all of his songs were about something real in his life, "Baby Blue" being about a girl named Dixie who he fell in love while on tour in America.

The kids in the early 70s sure had it good with music like this.
