  • Know your literature: Prince launches a mag...50 Cent starts a book imprint.

  • Know your history: The New York Times remembers Syd Barret.

  • Know your theology: Hell—the musical! (Wait, we thought we'd already seen that. Wasn't that the Nick Hornby musical?)

  • Know your geography: Chris rounds up the best and worst of the local music scene.

  • Know your media arts: M. Ward is scoring an art film, sounds interesting!

  • Rewinding with Tapes 'N' Tapes

While you were stocking up the liquor cabinet and the cooler for that New Year's Eve gig, Kyle over at More Cowbell squeezed into the Tapes 'N' Tapes concert at First Avenue, their triumphant return home after a globe-trotting tour to AUstralia, Japan, and parts beyond.

And who better to give some perspective on the incredible year TNT had? Kyle confesses to having seen the group ten times in the last two years, and while that might seem a little insane and maybe disqualifies him from, y' know, an impartial critical take--do you ask a kid who's seen "Return of the Jedi" twenty times if he thinks Star Wars is any good?--we do think that makes him one of the nation's great authorities on the band of the moment.

It also qualifies Kyle to spin a good metaphor:

You could compare this show to a great high school friend of yours coming back from his or her first semester at college. They’ve come back sporting a new haircut, maybe a new wardrobe, and while they are still the same friend you always knew, there’s just something a bit different and at times much cooler about them. The time apart has only made you appreciate them and your friendship even more.

Well said, Mr. Cowbell! We too are pleased with TNT's 2006, but selfishly look forward to album number 2 sometime in 2007.

A message in a bottle — or a Molotov cocktail?

Your rabblerousing provocation of the day:

There are bands that get more credit than they're due (the Clash spring immediately to mind. The Only Band That Matters? Feh. Just because they were better musicians AND better human beings than the Sex Pistols doesn't automatically make them the greatest evah) and bands that don't. There are bands that have virtually no hits but all kinds of cred (again, the Clash) and bands with dozens of hits but no hardcore fans among the critics.

Where do the Police fall in that continuum?

It's hard to say, mostly because Sting has corrupted their memory by sort of entering into Phil Collins territory in recent years. Still, we're a little excited about this: News of a potential actual for-real reunion tour in 2007.

What do you say to that?
