Hot latkes tonight, but music news this morning at The Buffering Stream 12/15

  • Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records, has died. He was a native of Turkey, where he'll be buried.

  • The paperless office: Ross goes nuts with year-end round-ups from local scenesters.

  • Jon rings up Imogen Heap on the blower. She plays First Avenue tonight.

  • The continuing saga of that Velvet Underground acetate: It's back up for auction at eBay.

  • List-O-Mat 2006: The Best of Craig's List 06. This is pretty funny and awesome.

  • And if that doesn't burn up a couple of hours in your cubicle, this new toy will.

  • How do you find that one tune you can't quite remember?

More Rock 'N' Roll toys for the Holidays--not so much for your shopping list, but for your momentary distraction...

A couple of months ago, we mentioned a new web-based dealio that helped desperate seekers find "that one song that goes like..."

Songtapper ostensibly "worked" by having you, desperate seeker, tap the rhythm of the melody on your space bar. That was a little confusing. (Rhythm of the melody? Wha?) But it actually worked like 15 percent of the time.

Now a company called Naiyo has launched a humming search. If you can overcome the technical challenges of working a microphone with your PC, and if you have no issues with cubicle stagefright, then you step up to the mic and hum a few bars of the desperately lost song. Thereafter, Naiyo is supposed to name that tune.

On the other hand, many of you have discovered that we already have a fabulous songfinding technology at our disposal: The Current's DJs, whose knowledge on these important matters is wikipedic!

    A Helping Hand

It's a time of year to be thankful for everything we have. It's also a time to think of others and remember that we're all in this crazy game of life together. Musicians and their fans tend to be thoughtful and generous people who often come together quickly and loudly, to take care of their own. So we thought we'd alert you to this:

You may have heard the heart-breaking story about young Callum Robbins, making the rounds in the music blogosphere. If you're looking for a special gift to give to the wider family of humanity, this may be something you'd like to check out.

Who's the Best Rock Critic in the Twin Towns?

Chris Riemenschneider! Ross Raihala! Sarah Askari! Rich Horton!* Let's talk about this sordid bunch. Shouldn't our local rock music critics feel the sting of criticism themselves once in a while? Let's use this opportunity to talk about who you like, and why you like 'em.

Also, if you wish to speak with your vote, you can take this little off-site poll. But come on back and tell us why you voted the way you did. In the comments...

*Also: Jim Meyer, Anna Pratt, David De Young, Jon Bream, Megan Wiley, Christopher Bahn, Steve McPherson, Kyle Matteson, Bill Snyder, Jim Walsh, Peter Scholtes, and anyone else we might have forgotten.
