The Buffering Stream 11/21: Less Is More Edition

  • More on the new Yoko Ono record: Flaming Lips, Le Tigre, and Peaches join up.

  • No sophomore slump here: Guitar Hero II gets rave reviews.

  • News of Mike Watt! He's playing on Kelly Clarkson's new album. Seriously.

  • David Cross and Modest Mouse (with Johnny Marr!) rip it up live.

  • You didn't know you wanted to know: Why has Beck never scored a movie soundtrack?

It's been a while since we picked up a copy of Mpls-St.Paul magazine. Mainly because we are not yet a 54-year-old woman worth $800K living in Edina.

Anyhoo, at their recently revamped website, they've posted high-quality video of two notable local bands, The Gang Font and Trampled By Turtles. To put it mildly, these are two groups one wouldn't normally associate with Top Doctors, Super Lawyers, Kinkaid's restaurant, nor any of the other Twin Cities icons we've come to know and love in the express checkout at Byerlys and Lunds. They must be putting the book together with awfully strong glue these days, because offgassing is the only explanation

We hear Minnesota Stories' Chuck Olsen is behind the camera. Which can only lead to one question: How long before the men in suits come and shut down this delightfully off-brand subversion?

    Kid Dakota, by Jayson Wold

This is the time of year when we put three different groups into heavy rotation on our personal devices: Sigur Rós, Low, and Kid Dakota. Checking in on our favorite S.A.D. melancholics, here's what this stoic bunch is up to:

  • Next March, Low intend to release "Drums and Guns," which they were previously calling "The Violet Path." Unclear whether the mid-term elections influenced this decision.

  • This Friday, Sigur Rós singer Jønsi and a collaborator are publishing a "picture book" called "Rice Boy Sleeps." The book will be available in Iceland, but should make it out of the country by the time the snow begins to melt. Also this: Icelandic--cool alphabet!

  • Darren Jackson, AKA Kid Dakota, has finally updated his website with the news that he and drummer Ian Prince are nearly ready to reemerge from hibernation.

We're almost done with our new album. In general the songs are shorter, more danceable, and entirely pleasing. Ok, I'm off to drink some coffee and greet the day with a triumphant blast of joy.

Being good Minnesotans, we're a little taken aback at this demonstration of unbridled emotion. Also this: That all sounds not too bad.
