The 40th annual Country Music Awards were televised in Monday night. Few people realize how the CMAs are on the cutting edge when it comes to industry rituals that are as pointless as they are sycophantic.

Actually we take that back. According to the Nielsen reports for Monday night, almost 16 million Americans are aware of how worthless the CMAs are. Laugh or cry? We just don’t know. What we do know is this. There IS an upside to the CMAs each year, and it's this: The passion of local hillbilly Jack Sparks which swings violently between incensed outrage and intemperate disgust.
