Love Boat
Everyone knows about "Jumping the Shark," right? Well, what about all those actors who never even rose to the level of cultural achievement of, say, Arthur H. Fonzarelli?

In other words, there is a whole class of celebrities who are famous for being famous, and for them, there is only one great showcase to celebrate their mediocrity: The Love Boat. Think Charo. Think Charles Nelson Reilly. Think Paul Lynde.

Just so, the world of rock 'n' roll. We're pleased to introduce the Alt-Rock Love Boat. Let's climb aboard and meet your cast of overrated underachievers in the world of Good Music, shall we?

Captain Merrill Stubing............... Evan Dando
Doctor Adam Bricker...................Mazzy Star
Bartender Isaac Washington.........Yo La Tengo
Purser Gopher Smith....................Pavement
Cruise Director Julie McCoy..........Patti Smith
Vicki Stubing................................Sleater-Kinney

You disagree, wot?! Let us have it in the comments.

Wouldn't Bob Pollard be a more appropriate Captain Stubing?

Ha. Well, this is a tricky business. I would argue that Bob works pretty hard-- what's he on, like album 200 and song 5670?--and that he hasn't had nearly the same sort of unearned public attention that Dando has.

But there IS something delightful in equating Captain Stubing with Mr. Pollard. I thought maybe a Separated At Birth, but the family resemblance is strictly cognitive, if you know what I mean.
