What happened to the Diamond Rio? Same thing that happened to the NeXT computer, the Edsel, and other emergent products: slightly ahead of their times; innovative ideas that were hampered by existing technology and a reluctant marketplace. Among other things, the iPod -- unlike the Rio -- benefited not only from an ultra-small hard-drive that hadn't existed a year before, but also from the establishment of an online music kiosk that made it easy for the average music consumer to download their favorite songs (for relatively cheap, compared to 45 rpm prices ca. 1982) rather than forcing them to rip their own mp3s off CDs.
