Remember when we told you that Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson had reunited? They recorded a couple of songs for "Open Season," the forthcoming animated children's movie.
The kids at Pitchfork have been granted the keys to Lost Highway's listening room, where they are streaming one of these new tunes. And the kids are not impressed.
"'Love You in the Fall' is exactly what you'd expect: feelgood, vaguely rootsy pop-rock that won't offend anybody. Westerberg sounds typically weathered, and Stinson's bass sounds, well, completely anonymous."
But y'know this is a democracy of the average, not a tyranny of the cool. Go listen to "Love You"--and two others--yourself.
Hans,I think you've pinpointed the problem;this is a Democracy of the average.
That may be good enough for you,but to me it costs blood.
Hello world.
See, this is what chaps my hide, and what I've been ranting about for years now. "Feelgood, vaugely rootsy pop-rock" is exactly what you're gonna hear if your ears are still waiting for "Color Me Impressed," and that's as assinine an expectation as this repeated critique is dismissive of every other quality that PW has cultivated in his modern oevre. Those who are determined to assert their hipster bona-fides over actually listening to music -- imagine that -- are doomed to repeat this cynical meme forever.
PW is one of the best songwriters in the world.
We should pay attention to what this master has to say.(Although I do wish a leader like Mr.Westerberg would be a wee bit more political sometimes because I'm interested in what he has to say.)
Common ground?
