You may recall hearing that Of Montreal--the sunny indie-pop group that is actually of Athens, Georgia--had licensed a song to the carnivorous restaurant chain Outback Steakhouse.
Well, it has arrived at your table. Medium-rare with hashbrowns, yes?
Warning! Viewer discretion is advised. Video includes footage of bizarre, self-slicing pineapples caroming all over the place.
God....This almost made me punch my monitor when I saw this...
What bugs me the most is they completely BUTCHERED the song with terrible lyrics promoting average food, with NO mention of Of Montreal whatsoever...
My ears will pierce with the sound of "Oh, thats the song from the outback commercial!!" for months to come....
What a bad way to wake up. Thanks.
I think I just hurled my Bloomin' Onion.
So, Of Montreal have now upped the ante of what it's acceptable for young bands to do these days: not only to allow your song to be used for commercial purposes, but to allow it to be re-written to gag-inducing dimensions. Is this some kind of post-post-irony?
Actually, I tend to think it's more that young musicians have grown up in a world where they've never known anything but "free-market-fundamentalism." They consider what we used to think of as artistic purity as quaint and ridiculous.
I couldn't stop laughing when I read your description.
And then I watched the video.
That's just... horrible. It's weak! And what a strange-sounding watered-down version of their music and voices. I wish this was plagiarism, then Of Montreal could sue the pantses off of Outback. Instead, they're going to have to sue themselves because this sucks so bad.
I feel sick.
I wonder how much $$ they got?
