Big Star: What's The Big Whoop?

Posted at 6:15 AM on September 1, 2006 by Hans Eisenbeis (5 Comments)

September is here, and it always reminds us of the only Big Star song we've ever actually hummed to ourselves, "September Girls Gurls." Until now, we had no idea that Big Star inspired all sorts of followups, from a Bangles album (yes, we said the Bangles) to a trade paperback. Anyway, here's everything you ever wanted to know about the song "September Girls Gurls"--including confirmation of the fact that it's " the only Big Star song many people know."

There's something comforting in knowing that we're like most people.

Know a better Big Star song by heart? Well, why selfishly keep it to yourself? Speak up! (Confidential to Paul Westerberg: Don't bother emailing. We know, we know: You never go far without some Big Star.)

uh, that's September Gurls not Girls. Another Big Star song to hum along "Thirteen". Or, perhaps "In the Street" for the That 70's Show fans.

Thanks for the catch, Jeff. Updated the entry.

Yes, thank you Jeff. Meant to do so sooner, but Michael made me sit in the corner for a couple of hours. Well deserved punishment!

You're just itching for a fight, aren't you, Hans? Have you listened to "The Ballad of El Goodo" or "My Life is Right?" Beautiful songs that still hold up. Too bad that "In the Streets" has been ruined for me; all I can think of when I hear it now is Wilmer Valder-whatever's hair.

I've never actually understood the obsession with "September Gurls." It's not their best song by far...

Yeah, I have to admit the Big Star never really shined down on me, though I love the whole, you know, trashy grownup-child-actor vibe that Alex Chilton rocks.
