  • Like Elton John and Phil Collins, Only Cooler In Every Way

The Wall Street Journal today provides a full airing of Paul Westerberg's involvement with creating the soundtrack to "Open Season." It was a big job that involved lots of high-level negotiations and collaborations, that drew Westerberg out of his insular, basement-unit solo career. It also involved frightening small children. According to the Journal, Westerberg said

"One song, 'Everybody's Stupid,' was kept out of the movie after the child of one of the producers was frightened by its lyrics."

Somehow we find that reassuring. Westerberg wrote 20 songs, ten of which were selected for the soundtrack; he also suffered the indignity of having his theme song, "I Belong," rerecorded by Pete Yorn and translated into 29 languages. Will all this exposure do for Westerberg what "Lion King" did to for Elton John? Or what "Tarzan" did to for Phil Collins? We live in hope.

  • Also this: "You're So True," Joseph Arthur's awesome theme to "Shrek 2." Never saw the film, loved the soundtrack.

  • Not to mention this: more stuff about this stuff.

Still no word on when the new Tenacious D movie will be released, but Jack Black and Kyle Gass are staying busy. Our undercover agents discovered a brand new music video for "Pick of Destiny" here.

Will the new movie rock our world? "Like a bomb filled with bombs."

Tin Star Sisters by Dave KapellField correspondent Dave Kapell writes to report on last night's heartbreaking show at the 331: The Tin Star Sisters take a final bow.

"The Tin Star Sisters flickered brilliantly before disappearing forever from the Nordeastern sky last night, ending their meteoric career just as we were all making the same wish: that Ivy would tell us she was not moving to New York and was, in fact, staying right here at home with her big sister Kim and the rest of her family at the 331, here where she belongs, where she will always belong.Good luck and safe travels, Ivy and Thew; hope to keep seeing you around, Kim. Our hearts are as heavy and bittersweet as the "hippie sugar" cupcakes you served after the show. We all love you... stay gold!"

All we can add is this: If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, go ahead and bawl your eyes out, shake your fist at heaven, and prepare for a long bitter dotage.
