The local inkies have weighed in on last night's Flaming Lips concert at the state fair. Both Ross Raihala and Chris Riemenschneider led with the weather. Both were bowled over by The Flaming Lips and their bubble ball. And both were less than impressed by Sonic Youth's opening performance. The Strib's industrious but over-polite Riemenschneider sugarcoated his assessment:
A band that sometimes doesn't play full force, Moore's team put on a powerful, if abbreviated, set. After "Teenage Riot," the New York art-punks launched into two songs on their new CD, "Rather Ripped," and mostly stuck to the album from there, with only one more oldie, "Eric's Trip."
Meanwhile the PiPress's Raihala, a fellow who's not afraid to stir the pot, was less shy about calling 'em like he sees 'em:
The persnickety New Yorkers delivered an hourlong set heavy on ponderous new material, most of which was lost on casual Sonic Youth fans.Soundcheck was unable to make the concert due to a flat tire on the Soundcheck bike, frequent lightning strikes, and… well, a persnickety art-punk nature.
What a surreal night!
Riding the bus to the Fair felt like being in a washing machine as the storm hit the Cities. Then once there we jumped off to the nearest building only to find ourselves in a barn with caged animals giving birth. Then finally reaching the Grandstand before the show started, trying to dry off.
I thought Sonic Youth were in fine form!
I am guessing it was pretty cold on stage and the sound took at least half their short set to sound right. But I agree they rose to the challenge with grace and all things considered they represented the new record, which I love, RATHER well.
btw, That was "Tom Violence" not "Eric's Trip". wasn't it?
