Soul Power

Posted at 6:04 PM on June 22, 2009 by Euan Kerr

I have been spending part of the day trying to watch ahead, what with the ever growing pile of screeners on the desk. I started with "Soul Power" a new doc cut from the three days of film shot around Zaire 74, the huge music festival in Kinshasa linked to the Ali Foreman fight already chronicled in Leon Gast's 1996 doc "When We were Kings."

That film contained some of the footage from this show, but now 35 years after the event the rest of the material has been hauled from the vault and cut down into an 89 minute concoction starring James Brown, the Spinners, BB King, Miriam Makeba, the Crusaders, and a host of others. Everyone is floating on a wave of empowerment, although it would be interesting to ask the performers who are still around today if their predictions have come true.

Tonight I am looking forward to "Football Undercover" which is being shown as part of "Queer Takes" at the Walker this week. More on that later....
