A rare opportunity to see the classic Russian realist documentary "Man with a Movie Camera" presents itself June 5th and 6th at the Historic Mounds Theater in St Paul.
Made by Dziga Vertov in 1929, the film was an attempt to capture life in the new communist country, using the simple idea of following a man shooting with his movie camera.
the film has been controversial over the years, and described as propaganda. While these elements cannot be denied, the film also offers a unique window into a long passed era which is quite fascinating.
The screening is being mounted by John Steinmetz, the founder of Steinmetz Classic Films. He will introduce the program He says he's been a huge fan of the film ever since he saw it as a student, and he's excited about being able to show it in the refurbished glory of the Mounds Theater.
