Spoiled for choice: a day at the MSPIFF offices

Posted at 5:34 PM on April 7, 2009 by Euan Kerr (1 Comments)

Imagine the scene: a room at the back of the slightly run-down offices of Minnesota Film Arts where a huge board marked off with a grid leans against the wall. Each box on the grid represents a screening time at the upcoming Minneapolis St Paul International Film Festival, and each box has a handwritten Post-it note with a film title, a country of origin and a running time.

This was the board that I stood before today and tried to make decide which films I should ask about to see if there was a screener available.

These opportunities don't present themselves very often. Days, certainly weeks, maybe even entire months of film spread across a board, and you have to make a choice.

Phew.

So I came away with nine, most of them docs, ranging from a film about meeting the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ("Letters to the President") and "Personal Che" about how different people see Ernesto Guevara to a portrait of the World Beer Pong Championships ("The Last Cup.") Also features on the creative process of J.S. Bach and on the life of French painter Séraphine de Senlis.

The full schedule is now posted here. What would you have picked?

That would indeed be a tough decision. I posted the titles that I'm looking forward to and the number easily exceeds 20. I think tops on my list are Rumba, Tyson, Song of the Sparrows, Food, Inc., and Three Monkeys. Then a bunch of docs, including both that you picked.
