Going 'Beyond Borders'

Posted at 8:00 AM on March 23, 2009 by Euan Kerr

The co-director of the Beyond Borders Film Festival Jennifer Manion, and programmer Jim Brunzell dropped by MPR the other day to talk about their new event which opens on Wednesday at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis.

The BBFF basically grew out of the Tibetan Film Festival which has run in the Twin Cities in years past. However as Manion says there just aren't that many Tibetan films around, and the Rime Foundation which now runs the event decided to expand the scope to show films from all over.

Manion admits it sounds a little corny, but the aim is indeed to encourage peace in the world. The hope is the films at the festival will spread greater understanding. In addition to Tibetan films, there is a world cinema section, a children's event and a selection of American Indian films, including "Older than America" which was shot in Cloquet Mn.

Particular coups for Brunzell have been "Big Man Japan," Austrian Oscar nominee "Revanche" and the local premiere of "Sugar" which is attracting a lot of buzz.
