"You need to be caffeinated," Astra Taylor told me today as she talked about the best way to watch her new film "Examined Life." She also warned against eating popcorn as the crunching will interfere with you catching all her subjects say, and you wouldn't want that.
Taylor is writer and director of the film, which is an exploration of philosophy and how it can be useful in the modern crisis-ridden world. Taylor interviewed eight influential philosophers as they went on walks, or rowed boats, or moved in some other way through a part of the real world.
The journey operates as a metaphor, but also as a way of bringing a realistic edge to what the subjects are saying.
Taylor will introduce the film at a screening at the Walker tomorrow night (Friday.) There will be lots to talk about; including the time she spent with rock-star philosopher and film critic Slavoj Zizek while she made her first movie "Zizek!"
You can hear Taylor tomorrow on Morning Edition, but here is a small sample.
