Well, they are over for another year, the Oscars. There were a few surprises, a few laughs, a few tears of sorrow and joy.
Hugh Jackman did a decent job as host. It's a tough gig, pretending you've got it all under control, as a half dozen set pieces roll around you all night, and almost all of it is live.
There were some great touchs, having former winners greet and praise the nominees, delivering their lines as both colleagues and fans.
There were a few surreal things like the way Kung Fu Panda kept floating up from the bottom of the screen to catch a morsel of food, only to be replaced by Keira Knightley as "The Duchess," all bathed in a pale blue light. It was cute the first time, but if there were any other films in the rotation I never noticed them, and I must have seen the Panda take that bite a dozen times.
The speeches, particularly from the big winners were great, the cameo by the "Man on Wire" Philippe Petit stole at least part of the night, and the grins on the Slumdog child actors shone all the way back to Mumbai.
But now we can get back to reality. It's quite a relief.
One of the best parts was the "Pineapple Express" skit. Their description of "Mamma Mia" made me laugh so hard!
I'm glad I wasn't the only one continually distracted by that panda!
