This has always been a Hedwig kind of town. The movie was a cult fave, then the stage show developed here was a huge and long-lived hit.
Now the creator of the movie of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" John Cameron Mitchell is coming to the Heights in Columbia Heights on February 5th to appear at the first Twin Cities iteration of the Talkies series.
The Talkies are the brain child of Tim Massett who recently made the dramatic move from Jacksonville Florida to Duluth. He created "The Talkies" as a way for movie theaters to fight back at DVD extras.
The way it works is a director sits on stage while his or her masterpiece is playing and provides a live running commentary. The soundtrack is turned down a little so the audience can catch every pearl of wisdom. Usually there is an opportunity for questions and a signing after the show.
Past guests have included George Romero and John Waters.
Massett tells me he's excited about the possibilities offered by the Heights famous theater, and they plan to play tunes from the Hedwig soundtrack between shows.
As he wrote to me in an e-mail, "just the idea of hearing "wig in a box" pumping thru the organ is going to be great."
Anyway tickets are now on sale for the event through the Talkies web site.
