Movie Natters: December 30, 2008 Archive

National Film Registry selections make for good reading

You'll be hearing a lot about "The Terminator" making the 2008 list of films selected for the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, but if you have a look at the full list you'll see it's a wide-ranging list with a lot of interesting film history.

Claude Rains as the Invisible Man rubs shoulders with avant-garde filmmaker Len Lye who worked on an experimental film called "Free Radicals," producing images by scratching directly onto film stock. he worked on the film from 1958 to 1979, and when it was finished it was just four minutes long. There is the earliest Buster Keaton two-reeler called "One Week," and John Boorman's "Deliverance." There are so many I am once again adding to my 'to see list.'

And that's before looking at the 475 other films already on the registry list.
