There are a lot of fine actors in "The Dark Knight" and then there's Heath Ledger.
He owns "The Dark Knight."
More than that, he consumes it, smacking his lips, wetting and whetting them with his tongue before launching into the Joker's next diabolical scheme.
Writer/director/producer Christopher Nolan's tale dances in the gray areas between right and wrong. He constantly puts his characters on the horns of a moral dilemma, forcing them to make a choice between two equally unpleasant alternatives.
And in the middle is the Joker, taunting Christian Bale's Batman, Gary Oldman's Commissioner Gordon, and Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent.
The Joker says he isn't in it for the money. He wants to enjoy the chaos and the disruption of his sociopathic actions. Yet when it comes down to meeting those ends his actions are extraordinarily rational.
At one point he tells the Batman "You complete me."
Heath Ledger's genius is he makes us all wonder if the Joker may complete us too.
