Star Wars revisited

With Geordie in town it seemed like a good opportunity to go and really immerse in the Star Wars exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota. There are some pretty remarkable things there and the show does work on a number of levels.

We started with the Special Effects film in the Omnitheater, which is based on work done a number of years ago to add digital characters to the first three Star Wars films, and the special effects for a few others including "Independence Day."

It is quite intriguing to see how the crews can transform a relatively small explosion into the huge conflagrations which fill the summer blockbuster screens. And being the Imax format there are as always a few shots from an airplane and the back of an elephant which make you feel a little seasick.

On into the show itself and I found myself drawn to the large selection of models and props from the films, while Geordie was much more interested in the hands-on exhibits including the sections on building hovercars and programming robots. There are simulators in one corner where you can try your hand at running communities in an alien world which are really fun too.

With photography allowed in the show we were also able to take some pretty spectacular shots of each other posed with Yoda and the Wookies.
