There were a lot of sad people wandering around Box Office Video on Selby Avenue in St Paul the other night. After years of offering an eclectic and broad selection of DVDs and videos to the neighborhood it's shutting its doors.
Many people consider it the best video store in the city.
Box office video looks like a shoebox of a place from the street, but like Dr Who's Tardis is huge on the inside. A small stair near the cash register takes you down to an Aladdin's cave of video delights. Another stair near the door took you up six feet or so to the foreign film section. It was a place which makes you wish there were more film-watching hours in the day.
But now the realities of DVD-by-mail or on line have chewed the business down to nothing and so they are throwing in the towel. They will be selling off the videos for the next few weeks. It's an excuse for one last visit.
