Talking to Tarsem Singh from London was great fun. We commiserated about people mispronouncing our names (he goes by tar-SEHM) and then he just talked about making "The Fall."
He told the extraordinary story of how he had been obsessed with the idea of how storytellers tell stories based on the response they get from listeners and that changes what they say, and how it's interpreted. He was so obsessed he began scouting locations, and searching for possible actors, even though he didn't really have the project lined up.
The he found the right little girl to carry the story, and he launched the production in a couple of weeks.
Tarsem says people either love or hate the film, but the people who like it tend to come back and bring 20 friends. What's even more surprising to him is many of them are women.
He says anyone who knows him would never think he would make a chick flick - but it seems that may well be what he has done.
