War for the YouTube generation

After director Kimberly Pierce made "Boys Don't Cry" she began looking for another story. She got one when she was in New York on 9/11 and watched the Twin Towers fall. yet it took a long time to develop.

Pierce said she knew she wanted to tell a soldier's story. The story she got is perhaps not the story you might expect.

Soon after the attacks she began interviewing soldiers to learn their stories and she heard the intimate details of the camaraderie of combat life.

Then her little brother joined the military. She says the family was scared, but supported his decision. She stayed in contact with him just about every day through instant messaging.

One day when he was back on leave she found him hunched over the TV watching a video mash-up made by some of his buddies. Set to heavy rock, there were video images of life in Iraq, mixed with videos of jets and tanks. It was war as recorded by the YouTube generation.

Pierce was amazed.

It was around then she began hearing about 'Stop-Loss,' the muilitary telling soldiers who thought they were done that they were being sent back to Iraq.

Now Pierce really had her story and the resulting movie is called "Stop/Loss."

The film will open nationwide at the end of March, but Pierce has been showing it around the country to selected audiences. We talked about that experience today, and we'll air the powerful story in coming weeks.
