Our pals over at Gather.com have been lucky enough to have a guy on the ground at Sundance this year. Dan Satorius, who is a Minneapolis based entertainment attorney with Lommen Abdo, and a huge film fan, has been heading out to Park City Utah every January since the early 90's.
He's there to do some business and to see some flicks, and he's been spilling the beans every day on Gather.
I talked late today to him as he came out of another screening. He says that a lot of people expected a strong sales year this year, partly because last year was so strong at Sundance, and partly because of the distributors looking for product to fill the slots left empty by the writers strike. However it's his sense that, while there have been a fair number of deals, the market is pretty flat. He is also hearing a lot of discussion about where the film business is heading. He predicts that the day of the blockbuster is coming to an end.
