Movie Natters: January 15, 2008 Archive

"Hello! Hello!"

Posted at 6:31 PM on January 15, 2008 by Euan Kerr

I spent much of the day wanting to be Bono.

The reason for this? A viewing of "U23D" the new concert movie featuring Dublin's favorite rock'n'roll sons.

It's the first ever live action digital 3D film, and it's an overwhelming experience, blending the images caught by multiple cameras during the "Vertigo" tour of South America.

U2 has developed an amazing stage show in recent years, and director Catherine Owens splashes the event across the screen.

What becomes clear is that while Bono has amazing pipes, in concert his real instrument becomes the audience. He directs a roiling carpet of humanity which ripples like a ruddy flesh-toned ocean, singing all the way.

The film opens at I-Max Theaters next week, then moves to digital theaters a few weeks later.
