Movie Natters: November 1, 2007 Archive

Make some plans for next week

Posted at 11:54 AM on November 1, 2007 by Euan Kerr

This is usually the time when people are looking to weekend plans, but movie freaks might want to look to their calendars for midweek next week because of some special early November treats.

On Tuesday the Walker Art Center is showing "I'm Not There," Todd Haynes' much anticipated Bob Dylan biopic with a whole lot of people playing Dylan. Producer Christine Vachon will be there to introduce the event.

Then on Wednesday the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis will host a sneak peak at the new adaptation of the Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel "Love in the Time of Cholera." Producer Scott Steindorff, a Stillwater native, will be in attendance. The event is free, but it's also a fundraiser for the restoration of the theater which new owner Joe Minjares is trying to restore to its former glory. Tickets are available at the Pepitos Restaurant next door to the Parkway.

Finally on Thursday, the Oak Street in Minneapolis is mounting a test-screening of "Perestroika" the new film by Russian filmmaker Slava Tsukerman, director of 80's cult classic "Liquid Sky." That film which was a sci-fi/punk/soft-core melange, with few name actors in the cast. This one has F. Murray Abraham, Ally Sheedy and Sam Robards in a tale about a Russian astrophysicist who returns to Moscow after living in the U.S. for 17 years. He has to confront the way lives have changed in the time he has been away, and what it means to his own life too. Tsukerman will be at the screening, which is free, although they'll be taking donations to cover costs.
