I walked into my neighborhood video emporium last night and found everything was for sale. The place is closing down and nothing was rentable any more - only cash on the barrel.
I'd dropped by to get some examples of Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson's work for a piece which will air tomorrow morning, and ended up owning a copy of "The Rundown" as a result.
It's hard to escape a feeling of guilt at times like this. This is a store which has served the neighborhood as long as I've lived there, which is close on 20 years.
This was the place that went up in flames a few years ago. It just took minutes to destroy thousands of VHS tapes, because as an oil based produce videotape is immensely flammable. The store bounced back though.
Now it's gone, or at least will be by Thursday. The DVD-in-the-mail services have been chewing on business for a while. And yes, we subscribe.
The selection at the store has been shrinking for a while, but still it's a loss of a place where we used to bump into friends and neighbors and get to talk movies. It's just a little sad.
