Trip planning movie style

Posted at 3:06 PM on July 12, 2007 by Euan Kerr

What does this say about us? We have a bunch of out-of-town guests staying with us at the moment. Actually they are from out of country: two Spanish teens and our 11 year old nephew from Edinburgh.

We wanted to take a road trip while they are here and Chicago seemed like a good option.

The question came up as to whether there was a good way to prepare the Spaniards in particular, for the delights of the Windy City. Now, I wasn't in on this, but the rest of my family decided to go to the video store and get flicks set in Chicago with subtitles en espagnol.

So that's why the overseas kids in our house have been glued to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "The Blues Brothers." I remember some statistic that John Landis and his crew demolished 2,000 vehicles making Jake and Elwood's bio-pic.

I think as a person with limited English skills having seen this as my introduction to a town I might be a little nervous. Like I said, this was not my idea.

It's going to be interesting when we go. (I should reveal that the movie has one of my favorite film songs ever, so maybe we will get to do some singing anyway.)
