Evan's gate

NPR's Kim Masters had a fascinating piece on Morning Edition today about "Evan Almighty."

It's apparently the most expensive comedy ever made at $175 million. The cost is due to a mixture of the insistence by director Tom Shadyac ("Bruce Almighty," "Accepted") of using real animals to re-imagine the Noah's Ark story, and the CGI needed to put Steve Carrell on the Ark in the midst of a biblical flood.

The big budget film haven't been doing well at the box office this year after the opening weekend rush, but the studios are now banking on the overseas box office to float their ark.

"Evan" could be an intriguing one to watch however, as it seems to be the first film in a while which could really cover a lot of demographics. It's PG so the kids can go. It's kind of old testament biblical, so potentially attractive to all the Abrahamic religions. It's got cute animals, and it's got gross animals (an expectorating llama is featured in the trailer.) It's got Steve Carrell one of the hottest comedians on the planet at the moment. And of course it's got Morgan Freeman to bring some restrained elegance (and the penguin crowd.)

So can it fail at the box office? Only time will tell. Can it fail artistically? Time will tell that too.
