While big congressional things will be decided today in the election, I have to admit as a former city hall reporter I have always enjoyed small town politics more.
I overheard the Maven and Tom Crann discussing political movies yesterday. They are working together on the big MPR live election webcast this evening, which apparently will include trivia (could there be movie questions in there? Well, Stephanie is producing, so it's kinda inevitable.) They came up with a bunch, but they all seemed to be about getting into Congress, like "Mr Smith goes to Washington" and "All the Presidents Men."
And that got me thinking where are all the small town politics films? The stuff about some scandal at city hall, or misdeeds at the park board? The only ones I could come up with was "Footloose" and maybe "Sunshine State."
Anything spring to anyone else's mind? This could be a niche for some brave moviemaker to exploit!
An aside: there's been a certain amount of discussion between staff and students at my daughters high school about the appropriateness of what's called "twerking" a.k.a. "grinding" at school dances. (The rundown is students are pro-twerk, staff are anti.) It's causing the same amount of angst as similar discussions have caused between teachers and students for generations. It's a good and healthy, if exhausting thing.
The beast part though was when my daughter came home recently and rolled her eyes, declaring "I'm living in 'Footloose' here."
It made me proud in a strange kind of way.
