Director-screenwriter-actor Eric Fleming had a doozie of a story or two when he and his producer-fiance Andrea Michaud came by to talk about their new movie The
"The Almost Guys." They have been on the festival circuit and suffered all the indignities that entails.
Eric mentioned being on a breakfast TV show in his home state of Florida, when it became clear the presenter interviewing him hadn't seen the film. What made it worse was Fleming had been up late celebrating the film screening, and the TV set was very small. Just out of shot a local chef was preparing for an upcoming cooking segment by grilling shrimp. Fleming reports that the whole experience was very unpleasant.
What was stranger was the time he spent having a beer with another journalist immediately after a screening. After having chatted with the guy for about half an hour, the ink-stained wretched complimented Fleming on the great performance he'd managed to get from his lead actor.
"How did you get that guy to look so natural?" he asked.
The writer looked non-plussed when Fleming pointed out "Dude! That was me!"
Fleming and Michaud (who grew up in Minnetonka) will appear at the four screenings of their movie at the Lagoon in Minneapolis this weekend, to talk about the film and about life in the indie movie business. They managed to make their movie for only half a million dollars, and are now looking to distribute it themselves through screenings and internet sales.
