Che Guevara appears several times in Andy Garcia's "The Lost City." He is portrayed as a charismatic man, quite ready to kill for his beliefs.
It's a very different Che from the young man seen in "The Motorcycle Diaries."
During his visit to MPR Garcia said "The Diaries" dealt with an earlier part of his life, and romanticized his idealism. He says he's doesn't know how true that portrayal was, but he does know that in Cuba Guevara was a very different man, with a dark brutal character.
"They don't know that he was a tribunal judge, and he executed a lot of people, and he shot a lot of them himself," he said. "And some people don't want to hear that."
"I have had experience with people who have a Che image on their shirt, and you ask them 'Do you know who that is?' And some people don't even know his name. It could have been John Lennon for all they knew."
