Movie Natters: May 30, 2006 Archive

Visiting Col Needham's house

I like the fact that the managing director of IMDB.com works out of his home, even though he and his family don't live the any more.

The New York Times profile of Col Needham is fascinating, showing how a movie junkie's hobby developed into a multi-million dollar enterprise. The fact that this guy did it in the out of the way town of Bristol in England makes it all the cooler.

IMDB is a very useful tool for the cinematically obsessed. (I use it just about every day, including to get the background details for yesterday's question.) To learn that it was developed by someone not that different from the other wretches you see stumbling out of the second-run or arthouse theaters is empowering in a strange way.

And to know that he works in the spare room in a house where his family lived until they moved into their dream home nearby, and he has not moved any of the furniture to the new place, just makes it perfect.
