"...we choose not to work with homosexuals"

Posted at 6:25 PM on November 7, 2006 by Preston Wright (8 Comments)

That's the excuse Houston landscaping company "The Garden Guy" gave when it discovered that a yard they had given an estimate on turned out to be owned by a gay couple.

We refuse to work for homosexuals

Landscapers reap harvest of anger

Subject: Cancel Appt - Garden Guy

Dear Mr. Lord,

I am appreciative of your time on the phone today and glad you contacted us. I need to tell you that we cannot meet with you because we choose not to work for homosexuals.

Best of luck in finding someone else to fill your landscaping needs.

All my best,
Sabrina

What the Farber family that owns Garden Guy didn't count on is the viral emailing and forum posts that popped up all around the country. It also became quite popular over at myspace:

Kirsten Ott of Atlanta learned of it from a bulletin sent out by one of her MySpace friends, with the subject line: "Please read, contact them and repost!! Fight this!!"

The Farbers were forced to shut down their phone line, their Web site forum and effectively close their business for a while until the situation blows over.

What's strange to me is that anyone could open a landscape business in the 21st Century and not realize that gay people represent a significant percentage of the gardening dollar.

All the landscape architects & pro gardeners I know are gay. Maybe its a way of hoping that "straight" gardeners stay viable in the marketplace amidst the competition...

Now Reuters is in on the act

Landscaping firm's antigay e-mail sparks online fury (11/09/2006)

It's just going to get bigger.

Moral: watch what you email as it can be reproduced.

If the landscaper does not want to do business for homosexuals, it is his business. Not everyone needs gay money. Have some tolerance.

"Not everyone needs gay money. Have some tolerance."

That's the same as saying "have some tolerance for their intolerance."

It is strange that you twisted this around to seem like the Landscapers were the ones being persecuted, as if their religious beliefs give them the right to be abusive to other people.

The other fact here is that Preston was merely being reporter to point out this dispute. No one above was being intorerant. I suggest you look up the meaning of the word you are throwing around.
