The garden of heavenly pig fodder
Posted at 3:49 PM on July 14, 2006 by Preston Wright

Golden lotus banana (Musella lasiocarpa) Related to the common banana, the lotus banana is raised for pig fodder in China, but is very rare in the US. It has great potential as a cold weather ornamental. The rumor is that these dwarf bananas can take temperatures down to about 10 degrees, which means it still needs a lot of protection in Minnesota. This is the first year that mine has flowered.
After the flower dies (lasting a long six months!) the mother in the center will die, allowing the baby culms to become their own plants. As you can see, when that happens I will have more of these things than one could possibly want.
Should I become a pig farmer?
