Perfect tomato conditions
Posted at 9:55 AM on July 24, 2006 by Preston Wright
This morning I spied two tomatoes moving from green to orange. It's tomato time. The upper 80 degree highs and 70 degree lows are about as ideal for tomatoes as you can get. Let's hope this keeps up for a few weeks and it will be a great year our little red friends.
Some tips for getting the most out of the season now:
Fertilize every 2 weeks but avoid high nitrogen. You want to pump up the tomato size, not grow new leaves. Don't foliar feed because the energy will be spent on the leaves and stems.
Keep the soil moist, never allowing it to dry out. Letting the soil go dry and then watering heavily will only cause the fruit to split. You want to keep the moisture as level as possible.
Do the "tomato flick." Tomatoes do not need to cross-pollinate (in fact they rarely do). Giving the flowers a little flick or shaking a branch will cause the pollen to mix around inside the flower. This will help maximize tomato production.
