A little bit of rain and some exotic seeds

Posted at 6:38 PM on July 18, 2006 by Preston Wright (1 Comments)

The writing has been slow as of late, partly because of the 2 hour watering sessions that I have had to keep the container plants alive during the heat-wave. Although watersorb seems to have slowed the evaporation rate down a lot, it still isn’t enough to keep a potted plant from wilting in upper ninety degree heat. Today's rain and cooler temperatures are much appreciated.

I am also trying to sprout a bunch of heat and humidity loving plants right now, namely mangosteen and cupuasu. Both are tender, under story shade trees that bear exotic fruit which is very popular in other parts of the world. I had to order the cupuacu from Puerto Rico and the mangosteen from Hawaii. My intention was to grow these at my place in Belize, but the seeds that I pre-ordered were ready now and they only stay viable for 10 days or so. If I can get sizeable plants of these, I will now have to get an import permit to bring them into Belize.

I have kind of put that difficulty out of my mind for now, though, and am just watching the marvel of nature take its course as these plants sprout.

cupuacu seeds

Cupuacu seeds (Theobroma Grandiflorum) Closely related to Chocolate (Theobroma cacao) it is the juice of the cupuacu that is prized in Brazil, though it is said that the seeds can be used to make a quality white chocolate.

I have been trying to find a source for Theobroma Grandiflorum seeds, so I was wondering where you got yours from. How are your trees doing now? I was down in Belize (Love it!) 12 years ago and actually visited a plantation where they grew cacao at. You are so lucky to have a place there!
