Who let the dahlias out?

Posted at 7:36 AM on June 7, 2006 by Preston Wright

The dahlias are out of the green house. This may seem like a small task to the uninitiated, but it is monumental to me.

My mother and I have this thing about dahlias. To make a long story short, we probably have close to 200 different cultivars of them. Since we keep at least a duplicate of everything, we have well over 400 dahlias combined.

Combined, well, that's a trick phrase. Sometime ago my mother decided that since I have a greenhouse, I could raise all of her dahlias, and she only need to put them into the ground, effortlessly. Nice for mom, crowded for me. So I find myself moving my tropicals out to the yard too early in the season to accommodate mom.

She needs her own greenhouse.

I have suggested this, but Mom smiles and says that there is no need to spend that kind of money; she can just use mine. In other words, if I want my own greenhouse then I am going to have to build HER one. So I keep looking for a design that's cheap to build and probably temporary--put it up in late March, take down in June.

Any suggestions, or do I just need "Dear Abby?"
