What's blooming, Belize?
Posted at 9:33 AM on June 19, 2006 by Preston Wright (2 Comments)
A friend of mine just spent 3 weeks at my house in Belize and brought back these photos of blooms in my garden there (see other photos of house in Belize.)
One of the problems with gardening in Belize is the difficulty of identification of actual spcies of plants. Many flowers have common names which are unrelated to common names elsewhere. Pehaps someone can help me with idenitifying some of the plants below?

The nursery I bought this from only knew that this is an African violet relative (Saintpaulia sp.). They seem to grow well in the hot humid air of Belize, which would be consistent with the genus. I like them because of the purple under-side of the leaves, and the two-stage color of the flowers, first red-orange, then later squeezing out a yellow center.

Locally called a "lily", not sure if it really is one. Could also be some type of Amaryllis (Hippeastrum sp.)

A terrestrial orchid. Blooms constantly.

Passionflower (Passiflora edulis) The fruit that originally flavored Hawaiian Punch (with only 5% real fruit juice, who knows if it still is in there?)

Pitahaya (Hylocereus sp.) a climbing cactus native to Belize that is now finding its way around the world. Produces a fruit that tastes a lot like kiwi.
