Seeds of my future
Posted at 6:00 PM on May 3, 2006 by Preston Wright (1 Comments)
Belize--I spent a good part of today working seed beds with organic material and breaking up dirt that had heavily compacted with all of last year's tropical rain. The other chore was the sorting and making labels for the 180 types of seeds that I have to plant: tomorrow's flowers, fruit trees, hardwoods and spices. There was only a short time to marvel at the strangeness and uniqueness of each seed's color and size -- Tropical farming rules are foreign to me and I feel like all of my knowledge of plants in my life up until this time is worthless. I know someone must be laughing at the gringo who keeps refering to his laptop to figure out what each seed is for, how deep to plant it.
Also the feeling of helplessness over comes me: I probably will not be in Belize when these new plants need transplanting (I've already used up all of my vacation days.) Someone else will have to do it for me. So here I am organizing seeds by function -- These are large trees and go to the farm. These are bromeliads and they stay in the shade....
Will these instructions be enough or am I bound to lose track of a good percentage of these new plantlings? Who knows? This is what you get when you are an absentee plant father: you can only supply so much help and then trust the innateness of the plant's intentions, then let go.
