What's blooming now
Posted at 10:27 AM on May 26, 2006 by Preston Wright (3 Comments)

Unidentified wild flower -- anyone know what this is?

Grape flowers getting ready to open. (Vitis vinifera) There are several varieties of these that are hardy in Minnesota. Believe it or not, one-hundred years ago Minnesota was one of the major producers of grapes, and then the trend faded, perhaps because they couldn't compete with California.

Fern Species. Not sure what type this is.

Korean Lilac (Syringa Meyeri)

Fig (Ficus carica) This is a greenhouse plant for me, though some people bury them in the winter with success. The fig you see is also the bloom. In nature, a small wasp will crawl down a tiny hole on the end and pollinate the fig. Luckily, figs don't need to be pollinated in order to eat them.

Chive flower (Allium schoenoprasum).

the top picture of the wild flower is Wild Sweet William / phlox divaricata.

The top flower isn't wild phlox, it's dame's rocket. Phlox has 5 petals and this clearly has 4.
