Watersorb, first try

Posted at 12:44 PM on April 25, 2006 by Preston Wright

I have to say, "Wow!" Last night, I tried out my first experiments with watersorb/hydrogel. I was planting some bare root trees in 10 gallon grow bags. I added 4 tablespoons of watersorb to the dirt and mixed it in well, then planted the trees. This morning I poured a 2 gallon container of water into the bags—it didn't come out the other end. I was astonished. It was like those diaper commercials (which are made from a type of hydrogel, by the way) where they dump a cup of water on the pad and it absorbs it all. Anyone who containers gardens knows that pouring this much water into a plant will start to drain out the bottom within 60 seconds. I even checked a half-hour later and the pavement was still dry.
