The Insight Now online debate during June 13 focused on a big thought: What should the role of government be?
The discussion took many forms and moved in different directions. But we had the benefit of taking the online debate and moving it to MPR's radio megaphone.
On Friday, June 17, the Midday program invited our two main debaters on the topic and continued an hour-long discussion about government's role. The best way to get a feeling for what we talked about at Insight Now might very well be to listen to the discussion. We have embedded that here. Marianne Combs was the Midday host and I joined in on the program. Our two main debaters were:
Peter Nelson, policy fellow at the Center of the American Experiment - Nelson spends much of his time researching and writing on issues related to health care and energy. On health care, he primarily focuses on issues involving insurance regulation, Medicaid, and long-term care. He regularly consults with state policy makers on these issues and contributes commentaries to the Star Tribune,
Dane Smith, president of Growth and Justice - Smith became president in 2007 after a 30-year career as a journalist for the Star Tribune and the Pioneer Press. Tax fairness and the issues surrounding government's proper role in society were among Smith's favorite issues as a reporter, and he has particular expertise in these areas. He understands the importance of smart public-sector investment that can help all Minnesotans improve their lives and strengthen the state's economy.
