Earlier today I spoke with a Uighur living in the Netherlands. He goes by Erken, he asked to leave his last name off to protect his family.
We found him after he commented on our video about Uighers held in Guantanamo who were recently released and given a home in Bermuda and Palau. Oddly enough, Erken thinks that act of kindness from those island nations actually gave strength and hope to Uighurs world wide. He said it might be part of the reason the population in Urumqi to decided to stand up for themselves when the clashes broke out in that region.
Erken says the "race riots" happening now in Urumqi have brought some much needed attention to the plight of the Uighurs, but at a horrible cost.
