Beautiful David Blaine video: Citizen Journalism at its best

Posted at 11:50 AM on September 25, 2008 by Jeff Horwich

I was tired. We were putting my kid to bed. And I needed a break from the news doldrums this week.

So I turned on the damn David Blaine "Dive of Death" show last night on ABC. I'd like that portion of my life back.

For two hours, they hyped the finale: Do not try this at home! The terrifying Dive of Death! And first he's going to catch a bullet in his mouth!

First of all, the bullet catch was at some shooting gallery, on tape. The whole show they played it up like it would be live.

And the Dive of Death...hype, hype, hype, hype, Hype, HYpe, HYPE, HYPE HYPE HYPE...then....

What the..[]..was that?

Watching from home, I truly had no idea. He's...hanging by a harness? Is that dangerous somehow? Then he sort of clumsily ascends...verrrry slowly....back up from the ground....and....commercial. Over.

This priceless video, shot from the crowd, answered my prayers. Just like the actual show, it takes a little while for anything to happen (feel free to jump two minutes in). But the reactions from the crowd...just gorgeous. (Listen for the woman at the very end.)

(SPOILER: And here's what was actually going on: Apparently his harness was attached to some big black balloons that carried him away. Which the live crowd could evidently see without much trouble. I imagine poor David was hoping for something more dramatic.)

And a positive word: His card tricks -- very impressive. Toothless people seem to love David Blaine card tricks.
