Okay. I admit it. I've been humbled today.
Have you ever thought seriously about your level of consumption? Sure, we all like to think that we do our part by recycling or turning off a light here and there, but how does it all add up in the big picture? Well, you can find out here: http://www.myfootprint.org/
This sim will estimate your impact on the planet based on a short survey of your habits. The program bluntly informed me that if everyone on the planet lived like me we would need three Earths to support us. Yikes! If you have a kid they can use a child friendly program to figure out their environmental footprint too. This one is more colorful and fun and it says I'm slightly less of an eco-jerk than the first sim. (Photo by eshm via Collective Commons license.)
While you're at it, why not see where you fit on a scale of global wealth? This program lets you know how your income compares to the rest of the world.
If all these number motivate you to act here is another sim with smart tips about drastically improving the energy efficiency of your home. (Note: this one is sponsored by EnergyStar so be warned that they promote their wares in the program, but there are a lot of cool tips there too. If you just want the info without the sim you can find it here).
How do your numbers add up?
Just discovered I'm slightly below average in carbon emissions for the U.S. That's a relief -- now I don't have to do anything, right?
