Preparing for a 31 day march

Posted at 10:01 AM on February 28, 2008 by Nanci Olesen

“…and I started to feel the very first stirrings of spring fever.”

That was the end of a conversation I overheard on the 94 express bus from downtown Minneapolis to downtown St. Paul this morning.

Then: “March can be so very mean.”

I’ve always thought of it as a “31 day march.”

Like we’re in some kind of forced step, as a species, trying to herd forward through the grey.

Some days in the month of March will be sunny. And perhaps there will be the melting of this rock hard black snow on the curb. There will probably be muddiness and puddles, which will make me feel hopeful. I will see more birds in my yard, and it will continue to be lighter sooner each morning. It will stay lighter longer in the evening.

How do you handle the end of winter in your household?

As the snow melts do you run out to chip away at the mound of hardened ice that you have been lurching over in your car every day?

Well, be careful, for cryin’ out loud. The Minnesota Falls Prevention website reports that this is a dangerous time for all of us to be out on the slippery sidewalks. They’ve got some tips on how to stay upright.

If it snows again, are you psyched to grab the sleds and head to the sledding hill one last time with the kids?

There’s an indoor park in the suburbs near Minneapolis called Edinborough. It was featured in the Star Tribune yesterday as a destination for kids who need some large muscle work and some real trees to sit by.

Most outdoor skating rinks have closed. But there are many indoor rinks in the metro area. Might be worth the trip.

Would it be helpful to check out some movies this weekend at The Walker Art Center? It’s Girls in the Director’s Chair this weekend, a free event with films by girls for everybody.

The Home and Garden Show is this weekend at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

I'm thinking of taking my mom to The Como Park Conservatory in St. Paul.

Think spring.

But beware.

We still have a 31 day March ahead.
